Despite the best attempts of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, spring is here. I’ve lived in Reno all of my grown life, and I know how tricky it can be with seasons. Spring means running the gamut of random snow storms, rain and occasional sunshine along the way to a sweaty summer.  That’s why I developed an alternate method of determining the seasons in Reno. For me to truly consider it spring, I wait for a sign.  I got the idea from this guy I had German class with, back in high school.

Jerrod gets a nosebleed right before the first big snow storm of the year.

I almost get hit by someone riding a bicycle on the sidewalk or the wrong side of the road.

This year, it was a college student riding an old black mountain bike whilst talking on a cellphone.

Naturally, I yelled a cordial “get off your phone.”

She retorted with a stare that said “up yours, buddy. I’m on my phone and last I checked this is America, land of the free, and home of deep fried Coca-Cola. ”

And it made me sort of glad. Because one, she was totally owning that attitude, and television has taught me to accept fierceness in lieu of decency. I was also happy because I had my sign. After a winter of dormancy, the fledgling cyclist emerges from the warmth of the indoors and hops onto the nearest bicycle they can find. Bike racks bloom like flower beds with a colorful amalgamation of antique ten speeds, department store cruisers and fixie bikes. I think it is great that people are riding bicycles.

What I don’t think is great is that people are being so reckless about it. Remember, riding a bicycle is the same thing as operating a vehicle.  Don’t be the person ambling along on their cellphone, swerving into traffic and giving cyclists a bad image. Get informed, read up on the laws, and use some common sense.
