Front Register/Cashier
FSLA Status: Exempt, Full Time, Part Time, $14 - $17/ hour
Reports to: Shop Manager
Position Summary
The Front Register Associate serves as the first point of contact for customers at Reno Bike Project. This position helps create a welcoming and inclusive environment while assisting customers with purchases, memberships, donations, and general shop inquiries.
This is an entry-level position and a great opportunity for individuals interested in learning how a community bike shop operates. The role provides hands-on exposure to retail operations, customer service, and the day-to-day workflow of a bicycle shop, making it an excellent starting point for those who want to build skills and potentially grow into other roles within the shop.
The Front Register Associate manages retail transactions, supports shop organization, and assists customers in navigating Reno Bike Project’s services, programs, and community resources. This role plays an important part in ensuring the shop runs smoothly and that customers have a positive and welcoming experience.
Core Responsibilities
Customer Service
- Greet and assist customers entering the shop
Answer basic questions about shop services, pricing, and programs - Direct customers to mechanics or appropriate staff when needed
- Maintain a friendly, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all visitors
- Support the mission and values of Reno Bike Project in all interactions
Register & Retail Sales
- Operate the point-of-sale system (Lightspeed) for retail transactions
- Process sales, memberships, donations, and gift cards
- Maintain an accurate cash drawer and follow cash handling procedures
- Assist customers with retail product selection and purchases
- Help maintain an organized and well-stocked retail area
Shop Operations
- Assist with opening and closing procedures as assigned
- Maintain a clean and organized front counter and retail display area
- Restock retail items and track low inventory for shop staff
- Help maintain organization of small parts and accessories
- Assist with receiving and labeling retail inventory
Customer Intake
- Help check in bikes for repair or service appointments
- Record basic customer and bike information in the point-of-sale system
- Communicate repair estimates and timelines provided by mechanics
Administrative Support
- Answer phones and respond to general inquiries
- Assist with membership sign-ups and renewals
- Provide information about Reno Bike Project programs and events
- Assist with light administrative tasks as needed
Additional Duties
- Assist with shop organization and general cleanliness
- Support events, outreach activities, and volunteer coordination when needed
- Help maintain a welcoming and safe shop environment
- Assist with other Reno Bike Project tasks as assigned
Qualifications
Preferred qualifications include:
- Strong customer service skills
- Comfortable working with the public in a busy environment
- Basic computer skills and ability to learn POS systems
- Interest in bicycles and cycling (bike knowledge helpful but not required)
- Ability to stay organized and multitask
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift items up to 40 lbs
