After the lecture it became clear these funding and policy changes that are being proposed are going to undermine, alter, consolidate or remove some of the advances that have been made for bicyclists and pedestrians since the early 1990’s. Serious threats are being made to important programs like Safe Routes to Schools and Complete Streets nation-wide. The Senate Bill is called Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century or M.A.P. 21. You can view the summary here.
At the end of the webinar both representatives for the Alliance and Caron had a couple of good suggestions about how people in communities around the country can provide their representatives in Congress with impactful feedback to help guide their votes:
-Invite your Congressperson to come and see what transportation funding for bicycles/pedestrians have done to benefit your community.
-Find a “top-priority” project in your community and submit it to your local governments (for Reno that would mean bringing it to an RTC Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board meeting).
